The Deadliest Monster : A Christian Introduction to Worldviews
Published in Hardcover by Coffee House Ink (30 May, 1998)
Author: J. F. Baldwin
Average review score:

The best introduction to worldview thinking
More people should know about this book! "The Deadliest Monster" puts forward a bold premise: that there is a fundamental difference between Christian thinking and every other approach to the world that's out there. To make his case, Baldwin employs one of the most inventive metaphors in worldview literature, appropriating Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as the non-Christian 'monster' and Stevenson's Mr. Hyde as the Christian 'monster.' This echoes B.B. Warfield's distinction in "The Plan of Salvation" between the Christian view that God saves man, and the non-Christian view that man saves himself -- but Baldwin pulls it off with so much class that you never suspect how deep the insight is until you've already understood it. That's one of the things that makes "The Deadliest Monster" a superb introduction to Christian worldview -- it equips readers with a simple, effective tool to grasp the worldview concept and use it to start thinking cricially about their culture.

This book is the best for self learners of World Views.
Hello my name is Eric. My teacher is the author of this book. This book is great to start the intro to worldviews. I read this book and the author explains it in the simpliestway possible. I would say it a must read book. If you are going to study worldviews this is the book to read.

This Book is Great!!!!!!!
Hi! My name is Hannah (don't be fooled by the name they put in here...it's my mom's), and I am from Texas. I am a teenager, and I am reading this book for a school assignment (the author, Mr. B, is my Humanities teacher). I am writing this assignment to say not only is it an awesome book, but it is readable for people my age. It is a great book because it is so well researched and supported, and he makes everything quite clear for everyone. Buy it -- it is a great introduction to worldviews. I understand Christianity a lot more now, and I know exactly how my new age flute teacher is incorrect in her beliefs. Thanks for writing such a great book, Mr. B -- I hope everyone gets a chance to read it!!!

Just Above My Head
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (February, 1990)
Author: James A. Baldwin
Average review score:

A stirring work...
Highly recommended...This is an "intense" read...and you will find yourself going back and re-reading certain pages to make sure that you absorbed everything from the page. A stirring story of two brothers desperately seeking to find themselves and a true identity outside of the religious world they had been so immersed in...

A Literary Wonder
I first came across the book as a teenager, rooting around amidst the books my brother left behind. I was just coming out then, and decided to try and read it. Much of it flew over my head then, but upon returning to it as an adult, I found much here to treasure. The characters not only inhabit the pages, but leap right off them at times, and the reader feels like he would want to sit in a room with them, talk with them, laugh with them and grieve with them. As a black gay man, it's nearly an autobiographical read, showing how far ahead of his time Baldwin was. It definitely comes highly recommended from this reader.

It's About Time for Just Above My Head
James Baldwin's voice creates a rich portrait to accompany the tale of a family atmosphere and all the forces that converge on them as friends, lovers, and kin. The cast of characters speak through their actions, allowing you to feel the "holy ghost" that the child-turned-preacher Julia could send through a church as well as the vocal harmony of a group of young black men who go on a singing tour of the south in a time where lynching was a pasttime of small town racists. I read this for the first time a mere seven years ago, and since then have read it again and again for the simple fact that you can pick up so much direct and indirect emotions, actions, and premises by hearing the main cast--Arthur, Julia, and Hall, as well as those they come into contact with as they all make their way towards finding a balance between the small line between existence and nonexistence historically for Afro-Americans. "Just Above My Head" reads like an almanac of people, places, and things that get lost in the romantic "good old days" that too many of our literary genius are guilty of promoting while ignoring the "have nots" of society. This book is a staple for me, and I know I'm not the only one, so if you haven't read it, then do so.

Magic: The Gathering: The Official Classic Game Strategy Guide
Published in Paperback by Wizards of the Coast (May, 1999)
Authors: Randy Buehler and Lizz Baldwin
Average review score:

Clearly explains Magic post 6th edition.
If you started playing Magic before the "stack", two main phases and an end of turn step, this is the book for you. It clearly explains the changes that happened when WOTC changed from old rules to the new (and, once you get the hang of it, simpler) way of playing Magic.

For Intermediate Players
This book is terrific if you have been playing Magic at the starter level and now wish to expand your play, or if you (like me) have been away from the game for a while and wish to get an update on the latest card set-- the 6th edition.

There have been some simplifications and clarifications to the rules, and Mr. Buehler explains those very well. The book also contains chapters on strategy, deck construction, and the tournament scene, as well as a complete card list for 6th edition including everything on the cards except the art.

I highly recommend this book as THE resource for the 6th edition.

More than just a rule book.
This book is not only a great way to learn the NEW 6th ed. rules this book gives lots of great tips lit single card stratigies, constructed deck building, sealled deck building and lots of just plain good facts. I've been playing magic sense 1994 and I still found this book to be very usful. Buy it really you'll thank yourself later I promise.

Streetwise Landlording and Property Management: Insider's Advice on How to Own Real Estate and Manage It Profitably (Adams Streetwise Series)
Published in Paperback by Adams Media Corporation (February, 2003)
Authors: Mark B. Weiss and Dan Baldwin
Average review score:

The best management book!
My dad wrote this book and I really think it's great and it can help you in the field of property management.

Very Helpful
There are many books that I have read that discuss the how's and why's of managing property, but this book is pretty darn complete when it comes to "the real life situation" of owning and managing properties. I am looking for a deal now and think that many tips and the advice the author has in this volume is relable and written well. I have had similar tenant situations and was reminded of how important it is to listen to complaints before over reacting to the crys of the tenant. Just the other day I had a tenant complain of rodents in her unit and as the tenant complained and complained I realized that all she wanted was to be let out of her lease early. The fictious mice she complained about was really a ploy for me to know she was ready to move. I've had hundreds of similar situations where tenants have tried to manipulate me. I'm glad I didn't call the exterminator and spend $ to destroy imaginary mice. I tell this story to express the similarities I've had in owning propety too. Cudos Mr. Weiss...keep up the good work. from a Fan!

Finally
With all the books I've read or browsed, each is simply do this do that, do this do that. This "Business Book" is actually enjoyable to raed. It is funny. Certainly the war stories of management, tenant relations, and more are important lessons but the author's make them fun to read. I look forward to hearing Mr Weiss speak or meeting him personally one day cause if he's that right on in print he must be a riot in person. I learned something on every page. It seems Mark has the ability to make the reader say " yea, that happend to me", "Say, that's what I experienced too!"

As a property owner I have had many many situations where I have felt alone in the world. Now I realize that I am not alone. That from coast to coast we proeprty owners share the same experiences. Thanks Mark! Write another book.

The Calico Buffalo
Published in Paperback by BOSC Publishing Company (09 August, 2001)
Authors: E. J. Stapleton, EJ Stapleton, and India Baldwin
Average review score:

A Life Lesson
The Calico Buffalo is a celebration of cultural diversity, a timely lesson in these troubling times. Beautiful illustrations complement the text...I wish there were more!

So Many Great Messages!
This gem is for anyone who appreciates substance and beauty. It is worth picking up for the language and illustrations alone, but the best part is what it conveys. At first I thought The Calico Buffalo was about being different. It is. But as importantly it is about the power of simple, uncalculating forgiveness. And as if those two important messages weren't enough, a 10-year-old adopted friend of mine to whom I recently gave The Calico Buffalo, revealed another to me. She thanked me for the book that "talks about how someone can look different than their parents." Phew. The Calico Buffalo is rich in every way.

A wonderful fable about understanding being different
I love this book! It's a beautiful fable which tells such a meaningful tale. So often we can and have become a "Thorn" and this is a great reminder of consequences and lessons. The Calico Buffalo has many important messages about being different, understanding and kindness. The rhyme, illustrations and story are terrific. I highly recommend this book to young and old alike.

Superpower: The Making of a Steam Locomotive
Published in Hardcover by David R Godine (October, 1995)
Author: David Weitzman
Average review score:

A Fascinating Look at a Magnificent Machine
David Weitzman has a love of technology and history. This can be demonstrated by observing the names of books he authored, including titles ranging from "Traces of the Past: A Field Guide to Industrial Archaeology" to "Underfoot: An Everyday Guide to Exploring the American Past." This fortuitous blend of history and technology is the underlying theme of this book.

For those of you who may be expecting a typical 'picture book' about a steam locomotive, this book will definitely come as a surprise. Although well illustrated, there are no photographs. This omission is more than compensated for by the line drawings that are precise and informative. The text is educational and interesting; the text and the line drawings compement each other very nicely. The combination is such that the reader is virtually transported by osmosis back to the year 1925 and to the dark and dingy backshops of the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, in order to not only personally witness but to actually physically participate in the birth of this magnificent machine, the first 'Super Power' steam locomotive ever.

Another pleasant surprise in this work is the interaction of man and machine, the creator and the fruit of his labor. Too many books about the locomotive ignore the human role; here the combination of man and machine is a symbiotic relationship.

This book is both easy to read and educational, and it is designed to appeal to anyone in age from beginning high-schooler to adult. Anyone possessing an interest in the mechanical world should obtain a copy of this book.

A must read book for anyone who loves trains or technology
My 10 year old son and I read this book together and loved it. We are both train and locomotives fans but despite what we knew we both learned more. This book is expecially good for kids since it is told through the eyes of an 18 year old boy, but is equally interesting for adults.

You learn more from this great book than history.
This book is amazing on so many levels. It teaches you how trains are designed and built, how math is applicable in the real world, how people get along, how some people are better suited to different, but equally important jobs, engineering, give and take (compromise). But it doesn't quite teach you, it intigrates these lessons in the oral history it is presenting. Superpower could be about anything and you would still learn SO much about life. I recommend this book to anyone, any age. It will change the life of a boy though, guaranteed. It will inspire him to study more at the very least.

The 521 All-Stars: A Championship Story of Baseball and Community
Published in Hardcover by Black Belt Press (01 June, 1999)
Authors: Byron Baldwin and Frye Gaillard
Average review score:

The 521 All-Stars
Outstanding book. this is the first book that I have read that focused on smalltown USA and the will and esprit that a town puts into a baseball team. I found the book to be extrememly inspirational and the photography was excellent. Definitely worthy of reading.....I truly enjoyed each and every page.

True spirit of community
Through evocative and tasteful photographs, coupled seamlessly with simple yet poignant prose, this book certainly deserves the five star rating. Baldwin and Galliard have definately captured a piece of what it is that makes us human. Despite the fact that the book's focus is baseball, the real story lies in the community that fuels the small-town league. This idea of a community that relies on its members to exist is nearly lost in a society laden with technology. Somehow, the boys in Rembert, South Carolina, and their love of the game, have managed to survive. If you are interested in good photography, black history, baseball, or southern culture, then this book is truly a must have.

The true sense of community
From its richly flavored and evocative photographs to its cleanly presented yet eloquent prose, this book is truly a must have. Thought the book may focus on baseball as subject matter, the story truly lies within the framework of the community that supports the league. This sense of community, seemingly lost in a world laden with technology, is alive and well in Rembert, South Carolina. Byron Baldwin and Frye Galliard really do capture this spirit, and use their respective talents to convey it to the reader. Whether you are interested in baseball, black history, or that spirit of community so true to "Americana", then buy this book. You will not be dissappointed.

Exercise Physiology: Human Bioenergetics and Its Applications with PowerWeb
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (20 November, 2001)
Authors: George A. Brooks, Kenneth Baldwin, and Thomas Fahey
Average review score:

Gold Standard
This work is the Gold Standard to which all other Exercise Physiology books are measured. I was introduced to the Second Edition of the book in an entry-level class in Graduate school. To this day I find it a necessary reference from my library.

Personally, the most useful information to me is on Energetics as it pertains to athletics, training adaptations, exercise testing and prescription. I use this information to help me decide how to train athletes from different sports. But, there is so much more than that in this book. Metabolism, Ventilation, Heart and Circulation (including CVD) is all covered thoroughly.

I especially like Brooks' approach to physiology. Brooks, likes to examine physiology by studying the rate-limiting processes. And to a coach, like me, finding weakness and improving that weakness is crucial to winning. Another topic I enjoy is Brooks' take on the misnomer of Anaerobic Threshold and Lactic Acid.

It's an extremely well-organized, well-written text. It's easy to read and a challenge at the same time. Brooks makes you think and delivers difficult information in a way that is easier to understand than other textbooks.

Eric Swannie, MA, ATC, CSCS

An excellent compendium on work physiolgy
I received both my B.S., and M.S. in Exercise Biochemistry from Univ. of Mass, and Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, respectively. My former advisor studied under Brooks at Berkely (He received his Doctorate there). In any event the approach our department undertook towards exercise biochemistry/physiology was at the cell and molecular level. Brooks text was central to the program. What is great about the book, is that it explains complicated biochemical processes in easy to understand language and places it in the context of applied physiology. The book stacks up to classic texts like Molecular Biology of the Cell (Albert, Bray, Lewis), and many of the classic biochemistry texts. In my opinion it is far superior to texts by McArdle & Katch, or Textbook of Work Physiology (author escapes me, for now).

Excellent textbook! I still use it as a major ref.
I would have to agree with most experts in this field, that Brooks did a smashing job when writing this text. His chapters on bioenergetics are superlatively done. Outstanding graphs, analogies ,coupled with an eazy to understand vennacular. The chapter on bioenergetics is extremly lucid when explaining the esoteric aspects of coupled energy metabolism and muscle performance. Brad Nindl from (Penn State University) and Dr. Paul Arciero (Skidmore College) still utlize his text, and often refere to his chapters on energy metabolism and exercise. Many of our lively discussions and research ideas were spurred by Brooks text. Not only does this text service as an outstanding learning tool, when learning the basic concepts of exercie physiology, but acts as a catalyst for innovative ideas for new research. The references are all up to date, providing eazy access to "cutting-edge" researchers. His chapters on cardiovascular physiology are well organized and follow the same lucid format of the previous chapters, however, i wish he included information on the newer developments in cardiovascular physiology and exercise, such as the work being currently conducted on signial transduction and on the dysregualtion of the sacroplasmic reticulum during CHF etc.. Overall i would recommand this textbook to any serious student, scholar, physician or allied health professional who is wishing to futher their understanding of this fastinating subject. I am currently using his text as a major ref. for preparing for part I of the USMLE!! Yours In Great Learning

The Art of Magic: A Fantsy of World Building and the Art of the Rath Cycle
Published in Paperback by Wizards of the Coast (August, 1998)
Authors: Anthony Waters, Lizz Baldwin, and Richard Garfield
Average review score:

Perfect for any artist or Magic fan
This book is amazing. It includes backround drawings and doodlings of such great Magic artists as Mark Tedin and Pete Ventres. One of the most interesting parts of the book was the inards of the Weatherlight and the Predator, showing engine rooms and cabins. Also, main characters and races have backround stories explained in detail.

I double highly recommend this book, it's fantastic, even if your not an artist or a Magic fan.

Something for everyone...including M:TG Artist wannabe's
I got this book not too long ago and I've gotta say, this is one for the records. It centers all around the great and wonderful art of Magic: The Gathering: The Rath Cycle. I got this book because the Rath Cycle is my #1 favorite add-on for Magic, and I love the art. It tells you behind the scenes stuff about all the different characters and places in the Rath Cycle. Now, don't get this book thinking that you're gonna get every picture in the set. They have alot of the art, but not all of it. I thought that, but I was still amazed when I got it. I use the book to help me sketch out the stuff I couldn't on the cards, they were too small. But they blow them up for the book. It's a great book, a must-have for everyone who appreciates the art and magic of Magic: The Gathering.

Striking artwork, fabulous organization and feel
The Art of Magic represents the visual glories of the Rath Cycle: a set of three expansions named Tempest, Stronghold, and Exodus that depict the adventures of Gerrard Capashen and the crew of the Weatherlight as they seek to liberate the kidnapped Sisay and unravel the evil mystery that lies behind the universe of Rath.

The book is filled with the lavish illustrations that have made Magic: the Gathering among the most aesthetically pleasing card games in history. Famous artists such as Pete Venters, Quentin Hoover, Donato Giancola, John Avon, and Terese Nielsen create a stormy world wracked with strife and death. We see the legendary paintings, sketches, and drawings that breathe life into such places as the Stronghold, the Skyshroud Forest, and the Dream Halls. And vivid characters are represented with handfuls of card arts, style guides, and behind the scenes sketches. This book lays out the story, environment, and aura of the Rath Cycle experience in a conscientious, experienced form which shows meticulous preparation and a beautiful final product. Who can forget the legendary Vanguard painting of the Dark Angel Selenia, poised to strike at the onlooker? Or Donato Giancola's Havoc, showing Orim attracting the fury of the Furnace of Rath around her? Or even the paintings of the mischievous Squee, a goblin with a heart and intelligence far beyond his peers. And for a look to the dark side, the City of Traitors, huddled around the gigantic Furnace of Rath.

The Weatherlight, its crew, and every inch of the worlds of the Rath Cycle are detailed beautifully. One will want to look through the glistening pages many times-everything holds a meaning just waiting to be unlocked. Even the title page for each chapter invokes curiosities: we see a depiction of the Null Moon, Dominaria's artificial moon (and possibly something of ill meaning from the Phyrexians?) and an added oval with each chapter's progression.

The Art of Magic: the Gathering is without a doubt among the best books to come out of Wizards of the Coast and TSR for a long time. A must buy worth every cent.
